The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are now open longer hours than ever before. It is advisable to queue early as by mid morning the queue is often enormous. Once inside head straight for the Sistine Chapel and view Michelangelo's ceiling. They can be reached by public transport. The ceiling in the Sistine Chapel moving west to east depicts the Separation of Light from Darkness, Creation of Sun, Moon and Planets, Separation of Land and Sea and the Creation of Fishes and Birds, the brief but nevertheless romantic encounter between Adam and Eve, Temptation and Expulsion from Paradise, Sacrifice of Noah, Flood and Inebriation of Noah.

Opening Hours: March 8th till October 29th, December 27th till 31st, Saturday march 20th and april 10th: 8:45 am - 3:20 pm.

All other periods of the year, Saturdays and last Sunday of each month: 8:45 am - 12:20 pm

Closed: Sundays, except for the last Sunday of the month and following religious holidays: January 1st and 6th, February 11th, March 19th, April 12th, May 20th, June 10th and 29th, August 14th, November 1st, December 8th and 25th.

Borghese Gallery and Museum

One of the most important collections of its kind. Most famous is the collection of paintings, the sculptures by Bernini and the paolina Borghese by Canova.

The Colosseum and Roman Forum

The Coloseum and Roman Forum are Rome's most popular attractions. Left the temple of Saturn, unofficial live theatre performances are held in the Roman Forum most evenings. An exhibition of 150 works by an artist who was a great traveller and who managed to maintain a strong individuality within the Impressionist movement. Manet was inspired by Italian, Spanish and Japanese art, Goya, Titian and the past, he allowed himself to be seduced by women and nature, transforming these elements into the main protagonists of his creations. Salò or the 120 days of Sodom: one of Pasolini's last films, inspired by Marquis De Sade's novel that crudely recounts tales of sex, torture and rape that take place in various Dante-style circles; the Antinferno, the Circle of Manias, the Circle Shit and the Circle of Blood. More than a hundred images, magazines, books and documents bear witness to photo-journalist Walker Evans' reportage on the effects of the Great American depression.A journey lasting three years, during which Evans explored farmers' living conditions from very close up, impressing in some raw photographic work the harsh reality of people's lives through their houses and belongings, the schools they went to, their facial expressions. The pictures on show have been treated with various printing processes that include emulsions made with silver salts, photo etching, lithographic printing, letterpress and processing on black smoke paper. Fifty paintings and marionettes are on show. The puppets are one of the most original insights into the figurative culture of the 20th century exhibited in the 1920s in Rome, Paris and Berlin. These are soft sculptures that are inspired by literature but that also have their own stories to tell. They are made out of fabric, threads, ribbons and various objects such as fragments of mirror, toothpicks and buttons. The virtuosity of the mirror is also remarkable. This painting contains all the power of the Impressionist movement, showing how it shook up the aesthetic canons from within, allowing a flood of emotion, until then censored, to enter the realm of art. Rome and Pasolini: a visceral relationship. The Eternal City pays tribute to the man, artist and great communicator with three exhibitions timed to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of his death.
Pasolini and Rome . A rich series of heretofore unseen documents - such as photos, films, documentaries, original typed manuscripts - that tell the story of the writer's arrival to Rome and his relationships with members of the cultural scene at that time.
Miracolo a Roma. Angelo Pennoni sul set di Accattone (Miracle in Rome. Angelo Pennoni on the set of Accattone) .
Sixty photos taken on the set of the film Accattone are presented. They paint a picture of this mythical figure and render a portrait of the working-class suburbs depicted by Pasolini.

"La lunga strada di sabbia" is a written reportage by Pasolini on the fashion of holidaying that describes a trip he once made from Versilia to Trieste. The photographer Séclier made the same journey in 2001 and took photos along the way. His black and white photos are displayed alongside Pasolini's typed manuscripts. On the 20th World Youth Day, which will be held in Cologne, a major exhibition on the image of Christ will be organised which features works by the most important artists from ancient times until today (Beato Angelico, Andrea Mantegna, Leonardo da Vinci, Zurbaran, Matisse, Rouault, Chagall, etcetera). The exhibition is curated by Professor Giovanni Morello and promoted by the Chiesa Gioventù e Speranza del Pontificio Consiglio per i Laici Foundation. After Cologne, the exhibition comes to Rome and will be housed in the Carlo Magno Wing in St Peter's Square.
