Italian is the primary language. However, as the capital city and
the home of an empire than once spanned across two thirds of the
globe the city has a cosmopolitan atmosphere. English is widely
understood although some Italians are too bashful to speak it!

November
2008 in Rome
November
is a compelling month in terms of the culture on offer: several
major exhibitions look at the life of former Pope John Paul II ,
the impressionist paintings of Manet and Zandomemeghi , the innovative
creations of Burri . Privileged space will be given to Pasolini
, with two exhibitions in town dedicated to the writer and director.
Mention must also be given to the 100 Nativity Scenes exhibition,
and shows displaying delightful embroidery work from Seville and
the exceptional puppets of the Magic Theatre .
On the pop music front, big international stars are not lacking
- such as Michael Bolton , Michael Bublé and Incognito -
but this month will be focused primarily on Italian music. Aside
from Baglioni's performance celebrating the thirty-year anniversary
of FAI (the Italian version of the National Trust), Alex Britti
, Jovanotti , Max Pezzali , Enzo Jannacci , Max Gazzè and
Stadio will all perform live in Rome.
Opera, ballet and classical music are also at the fore this month
with the Teatro dell'Opera's renditions of Gades' Blood Wedding
, Prokofiev's Cinderella and Bellini's The Sleepwalker , the opening
of the International Organ Concert and Santa Cecilia Orchestra at
the Auditorium series , and the spectacular Tango y Musical .
Theatre will convey powerful emotions through the energy-laden performance
of Enrico Brignano , the histrionic quality of Antonio Albanese
, the stage presence of Rossella Falk , as well as the feistiness
of Anna Marchesini , the interpretational talent of Tullio Solenghi
, the irony of Pino Insegno and the artistic vein of Franca Valeri
. As if this were not enough, there are also classical plays on
this month, such as 'Cat on a hot tin roof' and experimental pièces
being put on at the alternative Piccolo Eliseo venue.
The incredibly varied and at times experimental performances that
are part of the high-quality RomaEuropa Festival can still be seen
this month.
Visitors can also finally enjoy the recently reopened Ara Pacis
monument in the centre of Rome, and characteristic towns and places
around Rome by taking part in one of the delightful regional itineraries
currently being promoted by the Lazio region.
