The Pantheon
Rome is the only completely intact piece of Roman Architecture left
in the world. It is simply breathtaking and no visit to Roma is
complete without a look inside where, among other things you can
find the remains of Raphael the painter - 3 years ago American and
Italian Scientists took a sample of his DNA and took cross samples
from several thousand Tuscan Residents in an attempt to try and
find his direct descendant... they didn't succeed but are still
looking. The Pantheon is held up by huge monolithic marble pillars
each weighing 90 tonnes which were miraculously brought to Rome
by sea from Egypt over 2000 years ago.
Inside the Pantheon you should look up and admire the ornate ceiling...
Curiously the Pantheon's height is exactly the same as the radius
of its' dome... consequently inside it could host a perfect circle
or better still would be the perfect place for a fisheye photo...
if only they'd let Mr McKie our virtual photographer inside this
historic building !
Did You Know? The Pantheon contains lots of holes
in the marble floor to let the rain drain out (rain enters the Pantheon
through the "oculus" a hole in the roof 9 metres wide
and a symbolic link between the Roman worshippers and their gods).
